How Therapy Can Help Build a Healthy Body Image (HAES-Aligned)

Therapy offers a safe, non-judgmental space to explore the internal and external pressures that shape how you relate to your body. Within a Health at Every Size® (HAES)–aligned framework, the goal is not to change your body to earn worth, but to understand how biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors have influenced your body image and eating patterns.

In a culture where moral value is often tied to weight and appearance, it’s common to experience denial, fear, comparison, or shame around the body. From a systems- and trauma-informed perspective, body dissatisfaction and eating behaviors are understood as adaptive responses — ways your mind and body have tried to cope, belong, feel safe, or maintain control within larger relational and societal environments.

Through therapy, you can:

  • Unpack messages you’ve learned about bodies, health, and worth

  • Identify how family, culture, stress, and past experiences shaped body beliefs

  • Challenge distorted thought patterns and perfectionistic standards

  • Develop attunement to hunger, fullness, and emotional needs

  • Replace self-criticism with body neutrality, respect, or appreciation

Rather than focusing on weight or appearance as the measure of health, HAES-aligned therapy prioritizes sustainable well-being — emotional, physical, and relational. Over time, you can move beyond the “mirror trap” and build coping strategies rooted in self-trust, flexibility, and care for your body as it is, not as it is expected to be.
